A Sad Farewell

This was our final week at Valley Hospital, and let me tell you it was hard saying goodbye to the staff that taught us so much since September. It was great learning more about what it's like to be a nurse/doctor. Thank you Labor and Delivery, Bergen Mother Baby and also Ms. Annitti for giving me this opportunity to pursue my future career!

Cribs

Week 5/7-5/9

The staff asked us to set up cribs. In the drawer you put a pack of diapers, three shirts, two burping towels, napkins, an extra blanket and a pillowcase. A pillowcase is used to cover the mattress for the newborn. A burping towel is for the baby to lay its head on in case they burp up and a blanket is for the baby to be wrapped in. Every newborn gets a little baggy for the mother to use which includes:
  • shampoo
  • comb
  • cream
  • sanitary wipes
  • pacifier

The Nursery

Week 4/30-5/2

Not a lot of patients so it wasn't busy so we went to the Cheel part of the hospital to see if the nursery needed help. They had us fill the big cabinet with new shirts, blankets, and towels. Then we went up to the new part of Bergen Mother Baby which is now on the 4th floor and did the same thing. We dropped off  materials at the NICU but are not allowed in because we're still in high school and only college graduates have permission.

Echocardiographs

4/23

I was able to watch a Echocardiograph being done on a newborn to see if anything is wrong with his heart. She checked the baby’s blood flow and heart murmurs. The technician taught us how the heart works and told us a lot of information about what she does at the hospital. It was totally different to what I want to do, but it was very interesting to learn about other careers!

My Future as an OBGYN

Week 4/16-4/18

After high school I will be attending Bergen Community College for two years to get my Associates. After I either want to go to William Paterson or Rutgers, but I heard William Paterson has a great nursing school. I will be majoring in Biology to become an OBGYN. At first I wanted to be an RN Nurse but then I looked up what an OBGYN does and fell in love with it. Just thinking about delivering babies sounds so cool and fun...other people might find it unappealing, but I find it amazing!

Answering Phones

3/19-3/21

This week wasn't busy; it was an easy day. Monday we filled up waters for patients that needed refills. Tuesday we sat at the front desk, buzzed people in and answered a lot of phone calls. Patients call the front desk if they need a nurse for something. Some patients normally need Motrin for headaches or pains or ointment for the them or their child.

Newborn Baths

Week 3/5-3/7

Our unit was closed this week so we went to the nursery in the labor delivery unit. We took care of babies and watched nurses take their bloodwork. But the cool thing was watching them get a bath. They can't take a full bath because the umbilical cord stump dries up and falls off. For now they just wash their heads. Bathing the baby too much can dry out his/her skin. It reminded me of watching my aunt wash my baby cousin when he was born, and I learned a lot from watching her.

Babies and Bloodwork

Week 2/26 - 2/28

This week was once again easy; we covered the front desk lady while she went to lunch. We watched them take blood from the babies and perform check ups before returning them to their mothers. It was interesting watching the babies react to getting their blood taken because some are calm while others cried.

Slow Week

Week 2/5-2/7

Monday wasn't busy at all; we walked in and immediately answered phone calls and buzzed people in. No one was going home that day, but we had a lot of phone calls from patients and other units around the hospital. The nurses from other units or departments call to ask for a nurse or when a patient is going home.

Meeting a Doctor

Week 1/29-1/31

Monday Cecilia and I met one of the doctors; he made us laugh the whole time! He asked if we wanted to watch a circumcision and of course we said yes! On the way to the room he talked to us about college and the college he went to. He showed us step by step how to perform a circumcision on a newborn. Tuesday and Wednesday we completed our usual duties: sat at the desk and buzzed people in, answered phone calls, and went around asking if patients needed water.

Interviews & Advice

Week 1/22-1/24

Tuesday I finished my assignment of interviewing a nurse to learn more about her career path. I also brought a mom down to the NICU to see her newborn. I just want to cry seeing all those premature babies. I continued to answer phone calls, bring patients down, fill up waters and buzz people in. I was able to talk to the boss in Bergen Mother Baby about college and my future.

Circumcisions!

Monday we had the day off, but Tuesday we watch two circumcisions! They numb the baby first and grab three clamps; the two clamps stop some of the circulation but the last clamp stops it all. Once you see the imprint of the last clamp they grab the scissor and cut where it left the imprint. It looks like it hurts them but it really doesn't. They grab the Gomco Circumcision Clamp and the post and bell are placed over the glans and the foreskin is pulled over the outside of the bell. Once they tighten the tool, they use a scalpel and go around scraping off the extra skin that is left over. They put two little packets of ointment so it doesn't rub against the diaper. The doctor says it takes six days to heal and it does hurt a little.

Interesting Week

This week for internship was interesting. We always have a few patients going home that day so me and Cecilia walk them down. We like doing it because we see new faces everyday and I like talking to the patients while walking them down. When the nurses go for lunch we both stay and either buzz people in or answer phone calls. Cecilia and I go back and forth answering the phone. I get nervous about messing up but doing it a few times makes it easier. On Tuesday we bring patients down to the lobby and buzz people in and out.

One of the nurses asked if we wanted to watch a circumcision and obviously we said yes! The nurses always ask the parents if they want their newborn to get it done. I was a little nervous watching but it wasn't as bad as I thought. The final day was slow because we only had a few patients, so we went around asking if they needed more water, sat at the front desk and answered phone calls.
